ECE Westworks have been appointed to redevelop a confined former light-industrial site in the Beaumont area of Plymouth that is surrounded by terraced housing on all sides. The brief called for the part re-use of an existing incomplete development on the site.
The proposed design delivers student residential studios alongside ancillary spaces such as a common room, cinema room, management office and cycle stores, all arranged in an efficient footprint helping to maximise the site development potential.
The complexities of the site and immediate context called for an innovative design that uses perpendicular slot windows and louvres with angled blades to permit natural daylight while mitigating potential overlooking.
The overriding aesthetic takes reference from the rear elevations of the typical terraced houses that overlook the site, with their numerous rectangular rear extensions that have emerged over the years.Share this
