AJ Retrofit Award Shortlisting
ECE are very pleased to have been shortlisted for an AJ Retrofit Award for Wapping High School in London.
The Wapping High School project converted the disused Polly Peck Head Quarters building, adding a new structure on the roof to provide a multi-purpose hall and linked sky garden. This has become the heart of the school from which the cityscape can be enjoyed. The school design follows the Swedish free school principles with open learning spaces being at the core of the teaching and learning process.

ECE Director Nick Evans commented,
“The practice are very keen to be involved with this type of regenerative change of use. Office buildings can be very successfully adapted to deliver education space through a series of considered interventions.”
The school are delighted with the results and project is an excellent boost for education in Tower Hamlets. The need for education is to soar in the borough and the places provided by this project has helped to meet this demand.
