Designs submitted for new residential development at Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne
Working with JW Stratton, ECE has developed and submitted a detailed planning application for a new build design led scheme of 70 residential units.
This inspiring site presented ECE with the opportunity to develop a solution for one of the last remaining parcels within the overall Sovereign Harbour Master Plan.
The design responds to both the context of the harbour and the sites opportunity to create an area of public open space dedicated to recreational uses for the wider community.
ECE Associate Director, Paul Fender says
“The proposed design is an exciting solution that will secure a sustainable future for the site with regeneration benefits to the local community and ongoing protection of the local context”.
The proposal for Sovereign Harbour is a celebration of the public social life of the street and open space. The design is a playful response on the simple beach hut form. By exploiting this vernacular form ECE have created a modern interpretation for a family house.
Every aspect of the design has been considered to create a carefully detailed solution. The whole development creates streets where people might enjoy sitting out, kids playing, people going to and from their homes or just passing through.
The elevations are carefully proportioned and use a limited palette of materials to create a rhythm within the street-scenes. The strong rhythmic roof line, bold fenestration and projecting bays sit above a plinth feature that connects rows within the terrace. Coloured structural elements mark entrances. The joy within the scheme is applied through the introduction of these key details that give each property its own identity.
A planning decision is expected in autumn 2015.
