Kingslea Primary School

ECE Architecture’s design amalgamates two primary schools onto an existing junior school site to create a strong cohesive identity for its staff and pupils.

The accommodation includes a new entrance, a sports hall and six classrooms. It is designed to sit sympathetically with the existing building while providing the most sustainable environment for teaching & learning.

A new dramatic entrance leads to a spine corridor linking the infant’s wing with the existing school. This clear circulation route, with roof lights and sun-pipes to ensure maximum natural light, places the entrance/admin/hall suite at the heart of the school.

Six new classrooms use a mono-pitch roof to provide natural light and ventilation to two sides, opening up towards the south to maximise solar gain while ‘light shelves’ reduce solar glare and bounce natural light to the back of the rooms.

“The opening ceremony by Dame Kelly Holmes marks the fruition of a project that has taken several years to achieve but which has resulted in a superb school.”

Mark Dunn, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services.
