The ECE team has developed a comprehensive masterplan for Varndean College in Brighton, East Sussex. This long-term development addresses the future requirements of the college, with a primary focus being the replacement of existing temporary teaching facilities. The improvements include:
- A modern single-storey entrance building featuring a café and improved communal space.
- A two-storey teaching building housing high-quality classrooms and specialist teaching space.
- A new four-court sports hall with enhanced changing facilities.
- Landscape enhancements throughout the campus.
The proposed design of the new teaching building takes into account the surrounding structures and the steep changes in level, and will seamlessly integrate with the main college building.
The entrance building will create a positive first impression for the college. It boasts a spacious entrance foyer, a new student café and expanded communal spaces.
Given the college’s proximity to the South Downs National Park, special attention has been paid to lighting, biodiversity, and overall environmental impact. The masterplan incorporates initiatives such as green roofs, efficient ventilation systems to minimise energy loss, and utilising materials that reduce the development’s carbon footprint.
The proposed masterplan aligns with the college’s vision of developing the site in a strategic and sustainable manner. It will be executed through a phased approach over the course of seven years, contingent upon the availability of funding.
“We are delighted that we will now be able to enhance our facilities and use our beautiful estate to its best advantage for our students and for our community and keep sustainability at our core,”
Donna-Marie Janson, Principal of Varndean College.
